Bishan Maisonette — HDB maisonette, full renovation

A two-storey HDB maisonette redesigned around the staircase as the organising element, rather than a leftover circulation space.

The brief

The stairwell ate light from both floors and the owners — a multi-generational household — needed a ground-floor room that could flex between guest bedroom and study.

Our approach

We opened the stair void with a slatted timber balustrade instead of a solid wall, letting light reach the ground floor hallway. The flex room got a fitted daybed and a full-height door track, keeping both uses genuinely usable rather than compromised.

The result

Ground-floor light readings improved enough that the family stopped using daytime lighting in the hallway — a small, specific outcome that mattered more to them than any single finish.
